I know how great this can control focus because of the rack focus feature. Redrock just came out with something great but it's going to cost a few grand and it's a motorized follow focus with a thumb controller, so you can control focus with your thumb while using both hands to operate a steadicam. What would be great is if there was someway to connect a thumb controller like this directly into the camera's USB and have it talk to the firmware which would move the focus in and out using the lens' built in motor ... then we don't need to install a follow focus but still have excellent focus control - and quiet too if you're using the USM lenses

I just got my usb controller from okii (http://www.okii.net/). It does focus pulling and allows remote control of other things like live mode, start/stop etc. Might be what you are looking for.

Progress regarding the 7D
  +
Has there been any progress regarding the Canon EOS 7D? it's been a while since you've mentioned anything related to it.
Time Lapse feature?
Was just wondering if we could get a time lapse feature built into the firmware the same way some of the Nikon camera's do. I don't have an intervalometer, and I've been using my laptop tethered to my 5D MKII in order to take time lapse stills. This limits me to the battery life of my laptop (roughly 3.5 hours). I could get a cheap intervalometer from ebay or something, but having it built into my camera would be much better.

The problem with the 7D is it has 2 digic and 2 instances of DryOS, which are tightly communicating. It is not yet understood how to highjack tasks execution on the 7d. See http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/7D_internals and http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/7d_intercom

Why bother? You can buy a nifty intervalometer cable release for less than $50. I have one, runs for weeks on two AAA cells. The camera switches off between shots - that couldn't be done with ML hack.

Progress Update
It's been a little while so I thought I would ask. Any idea when we mght see Magic Lantern for the 7D? A beta? How about focus control through the lens motor with the ViewFactor bluetooth remote? Both of these updates are very exciting. It would be great to hear how things are coming along.

"The 40D, 450D, 1000D and 5Dmk1 are similar in hardware, but they run vxWorks and would be lots of effort to support. <u>It will be much easier to port 400plus instead</u>. See also Other_dslr."
Changes made to main page
  +
I am fed up with people coming to us, asking to port 400plus to their cameras; sincerely, "eduperez".
I had to correct some errors made in the assertions on the main page.

New Magic Lantern
1) The Panasonic GH1 has the widest range of available lenses. For example, the 5D cannot use rangefinder lenses or lenses designed for APS-C DSLRs. Both the full-frame format and the flange focal distance limit the lens choices somewhat.

  +
Does anyone have an idea when the new Magic Lantern (Compatible with the Canon 5d Markii firmware 2.1.2) is to come out? AJ 5.9 is pretty buggy with Canon firmware 1.0.9.
2) The sensor is not larger than VistaVision. VistaVision is, in fact, slightly taller.

  +
Magic Lantern :Dont Click Me!
3) The statement about "cinematic depth-of-field" was meaningless. What exactly qualifies as "cinematic depth-of-field"? Remember that movies shot on 16mm film, standard 35mm, and Super 35 are certainly considered "cinematic." Shallower depth-of-field does not mean "more cinematic."

  +
When it comes to Magic Lantern I have something to say "Free at last! My Canon is Free at last!" The only thing I ask is if you could remove from the menu the do not click me thing. If you shouldnt click it why show it? Please hide anything that is known to damage your camera.
3) The low-light performance is more than just "astounding": It's unprecedented!

New exposure mode?
  +
Seriously? If you want a foolproof firmware, use the stock one.
  +
And by the way, this option doesn't damage your camera. Nor does any other option. ;)

60D
I've always wanted to see a better way to autoexpose. Since you've already shown that you can detect over-exposed pixels, how about enabling a custom exposure mode that would automatically set ISO,Aperture, or shutter speed so that nothing is clipped? It could just be a custom function that still uses the camera's existing modes (aperture priority, time, P, etc) but instead of relying on the light meter it would set it so the maximum exposure such that the full range is captured.

  +
1) Does anyone know if Magic Lantern can use timecode? And if so, can you use it to sync with other cameras via USB or what ever way?
Just my 2 cents.

  +
2) Can I make the 60D stay on until stopped? I know ML will restart it, but it would be nice to have it never shut off.
5D Mark II to get firmware upgrade early next year to shoot 24/25fps
According to a number of sources, and purportedly from Canon Press Releases: http://blog.planet5d.com/2009/10/canon-eos-5d-mark-ii-to-get-24-and-25fps-in-a-firmware-update/ . This is great news for film makers.

  +
3) Is there anyway to get full HD out of the camera to a external hard drive for backup?
uncompressed video
  +
4) If the 60D can't do all of the above, does any of the other Canon DSLR's do the above?
I rented the 5d mark II and was pretty disappointed with the quality compared to my Sony EX-1 XDCAM; I think it is because the video codec is too lossy especially in the color space. Is there anyway of outputting uncompressed video so that I could capture it uncompressed or with a higher quality compression such as http://www.aja.com/products/io/

Your comments would be appreciated.

  +
I used my 60D for a still wide shot. The picture blew away my XH-A1's that I use.
Rob

  +
I'm thinking about using 5 or more 60D's along with a Video Production Switcher. It would be worth the expense and the time saved instead of doing post editing. Plus I could offer live events the opportunity to have the video played at the event on large screens live.
Codec is fine
Rob, you must have done something wrong while using the camera. The codec couldn't be at fault because it should be theoretically better than XDCAM EX.

The 5D Mark II encodes video via H.264 at roughly 40 Mbps in HD mode. The color space sub-sampling is 4:2:0. XDCAM EX is MPEG-2 at 35 Mbps with 4:2:0 sub-sampling. H.264 is more than two times as efficient as MPEG-2. The only technical flaw of the 5D's video encoder is that it doesn't output B-frames, which improve encoding efficiency. But the bitrate and H.264 algorithm should more than make up for it.

The camera does not output full-resolution video over HDMI while recording. It only does 480p.

Codec is Pretty Good, but...
H.264 at 40Mbps is indeed better than XDCAM EX at 35Mbps. Having said that, it's not as good as XDCAM HD422 at 50Mbps, which operates in the 4:2:2 colour space. Although this is long-GOP rather than all I-Frame, so I guess it can be debated.

Anyway, perhaps the key question here is whether Magic Lantern could be used to change the codec the 5D II uses. It'd be nice to have some options. The previous poster mentioned uncompressed, and even though the file size hit would be huge, having something like Lagarith as an option would be useful.

How about Magic Lantern for the Panasonic GH1
It would be great to have all the features of the Magic Lantern for Canon 5D for the upcoming Panasonic Lumix GH1 as well. Visual Audio Meters, Manual Audio Level Control and Zebra patterns. What do you guys think? I suppose someone has to get a hold of a GH1 and test it...yikes!...and risk messing up their camera.

Codec is fine but...
The codec is nice but not fine. When you play a video on a projector or HD display, you can

see compression problems, many blocks and artefacts. For internet and SD projects, it's fine

but for HD TV and Features, it's my First problem with the 5D. My wish is to use a better

H264 rate to improve this quality. It will make the 5D fantastic.

Dear Sir,

i wish to know about the progress on the 5D mark ii updates,

what is the plan now after the release of the new 7D ...

Thanks,

The 7D is not so competitive. It adds 25 and 24, but the sensor is smaller than the 5D. I tried it at IBC. But new things are coming soon from Sony and Canon.Video DLSR war has just began.

LOOP record delay.
This would be an ideal feature for event videographers using the 5D2. If the camera was on a constant 5 second pre-record loop, we could capture beautiful candids without consuming numerous CF cards. Alternatively, after stopping the recording function, an option to keep, delete, tag good shot or tag not good shot - to aid in an edit decision list.

More than 3 frames AEB for HDR with 5D MKII
I am interested in doing serious HDR with the 5D MKII. To get a proper HDR you need multiple exposures across the full spectrum of exposure and tonality. A lot of HDR shooters will do 7 to 9 exposures locked down on a tripod to ensure maximum detail through the highlights and shadows. I know that I can do this manually or tethered to a computer but that can be bulky and take up a lot of time. I also risk camera movement. I would like to be able to set the camera for a 7 to 9 frame burst and expose as fast as the camera will shoot. The reason for this is that I would like to minimize subject movement in clouds or foliage in the finished composited HDR image. The cameras in the 1D series do this, but the 5D MKII will not. So my question is, Does anyone out there know of a hack/mod to the firmware to make this possible? If not is there any one out there who I can find to work on this?

Thank you,

Hello Magic Lanterners. I am using the 5D Mk2 for some research that needs me to capture 0.5 secs og HD video under remote control via the SDK. It seems difficult with rge current firmware. Question. Does anybody know if it can be done. If not, would it be difficult to write a FM enhancement to do it? Many thanks.

Slit scan photography feature request!
I know that the main focus of development is in making advances for video capture, but while we're already here I have a suggestion that if actually done would BLOW EVERYONE'S MIND because as far as I know, it has yet to have a standard implementation AT ALL in digital photography; I'm refering to something called "Slit scan" photography..

In the past, how this has been accomplished in classic photography is that the shutter is just a very thin slit that moves very slowly from one side of the film to the other, thereby exposing all parts of the film equally, but progressively. This allows for the moving objects in the scene to become very visually distorted, in a predictable and oftentimes very visually impressive way. Take these examples I found with a simple google search for "slit scan photography"..

(Warning, the first one is a tasteful nude, but likely NSFW nevertheless)

http://ansenseale.com/photo.cfm?ID=1223

(these next two are safe for work)

http://people.rit.edu/andpph/photofile-b/doisneau-1.jpg

http://people.rit.edu/andpph/photofile-b/slitscan-1.jpg

How this could very easily work in digital photography would simply be that instead of all pixels in the sensor being sampled simultaneously as they are now, they would be sampled in rows or columns sequentially, each row or column for an equal amount of time and with an equal delay from the last. (It's not necessary that one row be done exposing before the next one starts, only that there is a specific time offset between their start times) Because it is being done digitally, there is no reason every aspect of this process couldn't be controlled and customized on the fly for the specific desired effect; E.G. whether the scannning went top to bottom, bottom to top, left to right, right to left, or EVEN if you wanted to get crazy and run diagonal lines progressively from one corner to another. The other main customizable aspect would be the total amount of time the "scan" duration took.

I hope I've explained this idea clearly and that I'm not the only one who sees the incredible value a feature like this would add to a digital camera. If there is anything I personally can do to advance this idea being implemented, I'd love to hear it, so please, someone follow up!

Thanks guys!

Dear Magic Lantern,

my question to the development team is could it be possible to have an extra framerate/ resolution for the canon as an extra to the rates already there.

My preferred resolution would be 1280-720 24 fps1280-720 60 fps.

Thus being able to capture some pictures in 1280-720 HD in slow motion.

The data rate isn't that far of 1920-1080 in 24 fps.

This would be superduper, Spencer Vos, creative director

"Now, I would much rather see people working on custom crop-marks, custom frame-sizes, boosting frame-rates by using a narrower crop-framesizes? Who would say no to 1920×800 cinemascope 100Mbps? Or 1920×800 48fps at 50Mbps? Even 1280×534 120fps? Or full sensor-height at 1296×1080 for a 2:1 anamorphic lens. With some clever work on the line-skipping I believe we could make the sensor anamorphic, if my mind isn’t tricking me out. Or a classic 1440×1080 for 4:3 usage. All of these seem to me more desirable than wishing for 4K-vaporware. Even if we don’t boost the bitrate it still equates to more bits per pixel at initial encoding.

Maybe even 1920×800 boosted to 170Mbps capped to 5minutes because of heat-issues? That would be gorgeous to say the least."

I think some of these developments would be better than searching for a couple seconds of 4k footage.

Regards, Pierre

I would like to add some suggestions to this topic.

A slow motion feature I think would be much more interesting then 4k. 60fps as today on the 550d that I have is nice but 120fps would be good for catching jumps in extreme sports and such things.

does anyone know the consequences to hardware, CMOS/shutter wear/lifespan. I notice monitoring CMOS temp is a feature, anyidea of sensible thermal boundaries, etc, to maintain lifespan 79.66.219.52 10:49, January 11, 2011 (UTC)

Installing ML on 500D. please help!
Hi. just heard about ML. seems like you guys have out performed by making something that no one ever thought would be possible.. so cheers to that!

I have a canon 500D and ur main page says ML will work on my camera. Last night i did a few things to try and download the software to my camera but as i expected, i knew i am doing it wrong.

So my request is, if you could write in detail on how to install ML on 500D the same way you have for 550D and 5D mark II

Its kinda frustrating to see such an awesome software in front of you but just unable to use it, but gonna be patient!! = )

ps: only if the language on the 500D page was no so techy.. it would be easier to download for ppl like me...

thanks.. really thank you for coming up with something like this!!! = )

- Answer:

Just go to the 500D page here and download the latest build and follow the instruction in the installation heading. Simple enough :) By the way, ML does not work with any camera, soo far it has only supports fully the 5D II and the T2i(550D). ML for T1i aka 500D is in developement and is becoming more stable everyday, you can test it using the link I posted before.

eliminate jelly vision possible by shooting across the sensor...
Is it possible in the firmware to control what part of the sensor is actually used to capture the image?

It occurred to me that if you capture the frames of a video across instead of down the sensor you could eliminate the effects of jelly vision on fast panning shots.

if you go here you can see a quick test I did just by turning the camera 90 degrees.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hddazl8zfVA

Ideally if the image could actually be captured sideways on the chip then the same thing could be at full resolution since the sensors on these cameras have more than enough resolution both vertically and horizontally to capture full 1080p.

Auto ISO Limiting
I shoot a lot of video with my 5D. When I am running around, trying to film and stay on top of everything else going on I will quite often set my ISO to Auto so that I can shoot with a constant 1/50 (180 degree shutter rule, and all that). This saves a lot of fiddling, especially when you are moving around and through inconsistent lighting environments. I know its not optimal but needs must when you have no crew and you need to be in control of a situation. What I would like is to be able to limit how far my auto ISO will go: Allowing it to roam to get the right exposure until say 800 or 1000 would mean I could make my life a little easier :) and not get really noisy images when I have too little light. Is that a possibility?

Reply: you can already do this via your custom settings in 5D2 and 60D and other cams

Is there any way to have a basic firmware hack to hold us over while bata testing is going on for all the un hacked cameras and new cameras. the only things I would like to controle is Bit rate control (QScale parameter) for the H.264 and to disable AGC. those are the only things I need ATM for the canon 60D everything else I can live with out.

Just a cry from a fellow filmmaker :)

Will there be a magic lantern firmware for the t3i?

Does this have to do with Magic Lantern?
All of a sudden out of the blue I get these errors - from both of my memory cards yesterday. Both had Magic Lantern on them. (Only one does now)

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/413/screenshot20110313at850.png

My memory cards work fine in my Camera - Canon T2i.

But they will not be recognized on my Mac or even my little Windows Netbook.

http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/5674/screenshot20110313at857.png

Diskwarrior won't recognize it. Data Rescue hangs and doesn't go anywhere. And the repair section in Disk Utility is grayed out. I formatted the card in my camera and it still shows same error message above. and setting up a new partition in Disk Utility doesnt work either - it says it cant "find the allocated space" (or something similar)

I'm out of ideas and have an important shoot wednesday... What do I do? please..

I am able to hook the camera up to the computer with the sd card inside to move the files..but I'd like to be able to access the SD card manually as well. Which I cannot do! Whats wrong?

----

I've never had such problems so far, and I have corrupted the filesystem several times during development (but in all cases, formatting the card fixed the problem).

What I'd try:

* Format the card in the camera with low-level option

* Try another card reader

* Borrow another card (one which you know is working)

Hi ! I'd like to know if there are any plans and if it is possible at all, to shoot with the 5D Mark II frame rates higher than 30fps... I'd love a 60fps or 120fps even at lower resolution - like 720 p or something.. any limitations on that ? anyone working on that ??

Thanks Guys !!!

How exactly do I uninstall magic lantern from my T2i? The wiki says to power cycle the camera, but I don't know what that means and couldn't find anything on google about it.

5D HDMI OUT!
I just got the Atomos Ninja and am currently testing it out with my T2i and 5D (with Magic Lantern running on both)

The Ninja can capture a clean 1080 59.97i signal from the T2i (with black bars on the sides)

The 5D however sends a very confused signal (when it works) to the Ninja, and the Magic Lantern Clear All does not really work due to some odd placmnent on the screen.

Can someone PLEASE figure out a way to clean the HDMI out signal to get an uncropped, clean 1920x1080. I think we will all scream in joy!!!

Hi!

Will it work on 650D (Rebel T4i) ?
I was wondering, if it might be possible to record more than 60fps in 720p or maybe 60fps in1080p? If you can lower bitrates, coding and stuff, there might be capacity to get full hd at 60fps.

Canon 70D Compatibility
Hi everyone,

  +
Can Magic Lantern be installed in Cannon 70D (seventy) ?
Just my 2 cents:

- A button (with confirmation) to delete files in the 100DCIM folder only, since you cannot format your card with ML on it (this way you won't need a computer to delete files)

- Transfer files via the usb to an external harddrive (along with the function mentioned above it would be possible to transfer and then delete the files when the card is full, so you can keep filming without carrying along a laptop)

- A possibility to swap the audiometers with the infobar at the bottom.

- Auto int. / ext. as a standard setting. ML sometimes resets itself (to only internal mic) and it's very annoying having to reshoot with the external input because of this. And auto int. / ext. is the best option to start with anyway

Progress regarding the 7D[]

Has there been any progress regarding the Canon EOS 7D? it's been a while since you've mentioned anything related to it.

The problem with the 7D is it has 2 digic and 2 instances of DryOS, which are tightly communicating. It is not yet understood how to highjack tasks execution on the 7d. See http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/7D_internals and http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/7d_intercom

I was hoping to see if there are any possibilities to change or update the ware for getting longer record times on canon 5D Mark II125.39.162.13 00:04, November 24, 2011 (UTC)

I use my canon 550d with magic lantern, inbuilt flash (set to -10EV) to trigger my external slave flash (older flash 3-4sec recycle time).. but every time i have to click "*" FEL (Flash Exposure Lock) and hide that preflash with my hand so that my external slave flash do not trigger with preflash.. and then i click my final shot....
Every time i have to click FEL button.. is there any way to bypass or ignore preflash.. or disable E-TTL system from canon 550d...

White pixels[]

Hello. I hace one problem with this softwear. When i am recording a video on my 50d i have some pixels (always on same place) white, but not when i take pictures and only on my Canon lenses 17-85mm. Its something like dead pixels. How can i fix this problem?

Somebody please remove the following line:

"The 40D, 450D, 1000D and 5Dmk1 are similar in hardware, but they run vxWorks and would be lots of effort to support. It will be much easier to port 400plus instead. See also Other_dslr."

I am fed up with people coming to us, asking to port 400plus to their cameras; sincerely, "eduperez".

New Magic Lantern[]

Does anyone have an idea when the new Magic Lantern (Compatible with the Canon 5d Markii firmware 2.1.2) is to come out? AJ 5.9 is pretty buggy with Canon firmware 1.0.9.

Magic Lantern :Dont Click Me![]

When it comes to Magic Lantern I have something to say "Free at last! My Canon is Free at last!" The only thing I ask is if you could remove from the menu the do not click me thing. If you shouldnt click it why show it? Please hide anything that is known to damage your camera.

-- Seriously? If you want a foolproof firmware, use the stock one. And by the way, this option doesn't damage your camera. Nor does any other option. ;) --

60D[]

1) Does anyone know if Magic Lantern can use timecode? And if so, can you use it to sync with other cameras via USB or what ever way?

2) Can I make the 60D stay on until stopped? I know ML will restart it, but it would be nice to have it never shut off.

3) Is there anyway to get full HD out of the camera to a external hard drive for backup?

4) If the 60D can't do all of the above, does any of the other Canon DSLR's do the above?

I used my 60D for a still wide shot. The picture blew away my XH-A1's that I use.

I'm thinking about using 5 or more 60D's along with a Video Production Switcher. It would be worth the expense and the time saved instead of doing post editing. Plus I could offer live events the opportunity to have the video played at the event on large screens live.

Thanks

Audio checking[]

If I have magic lantern installed on my T2i can i record and listen to the audio that is being captured from the mic at the same time? So I know what's being captured?

Many thanks
